History of the Black Mouth Cur

The Black Mouth Cur is certainly not a new breed of dog. These dogs are multi-talented dogs that originated in the Southern United States. The Black Mouth Cur can be used as a hunting dog, herding dog, or as in the case of some dogs, both.

Black Mouth Curs are a rugged breed, and coats can range in shades and colors. Colors can include red, yellow, brindle, black, fawn, or buckskin. However, my dogs are all fawn, yellow or buckskin. Their coats are short, and may be coarse or fine, and both types often occur in the same litter. The name “Black Mouth” comes from the dark coloring around the lips and roof of the mouth, the muzzle may or may not also have this coloring. This is a medium sized dog, and weight of the Black Mouth Cur can range anywhere from 40 to 90 pounds, males generally being larger. However, my dogs average between 50 and 75 pounds. My dogs are East Texas Black Mouth Curs and most are registered with the Southern Black Mouth Cur Breeders Association (SBMCBA).

My dogs are stock dogs/hog dogs, they generally are not interested in small tree game. That isn't to say that they won't tree, but they are not bred for it and I will not sell one of my dogs as a tree dog.


These Cur dogs are becoming more popular with people for many reasons. smaller family dogs, and hunting dogs, are being killed by packs of coyotes, wolves, large cats, such as mountain lions, and bears.
